Hand embroidered, at the pace of the seasons

SHIKI embroiders cushions by hand. Each season brings its own colours and motifs.

Isabel's hands

SHIKI is Isabel. Every cushion is drawn and embroidered by her hand, from the first stitch to the last. No two pieces are ever alike.

"I learned to embroider before I could write. My teacher, Clara, showed me the first stitches. I was a child, in Argentina. At home I watched my grandmother embroider: in her generation every woman could do it, and nobody called it art."

Born in Argentina, she worked in several trades before giving herself entirely to embroidery. She took classes in ceramics, painting and knitting, and never stopped embroidering, in spells. What she knows was passed to her from one person to the next, never through a school.

Nature, first

The motifs come from what she looks at: flowers, butterflies, the sea, the mountains. Ridgelines return often in her work, like a landscape that has always been with her.

"I believe nature is the most beautiful and the strongest thing we have. That is what I try to pass on, through a simple object kept at home."

The seasons

Shiki means the four seasons in Japanese. Isabel studied the tea ceremony and origami, and finds in them what embroidery teaches her: patience, and the pleasure of working with her hands. She is also a Reiki master.

"They teach you to work with your hands, unhurried, with your whole attention. I embroider in the same spirit: without rushing the gesture, and without thinking of anything else."

The collections change four times a year. An autumn piece will not be embroidered again the following spring.

What you receive

A complete cushion, filled and ready to use, not a cover alone. It travels compressed to reduce its bulk and regains its shape within a few hours. A cover alone remains possible on request.

The embroidery

The work is embroidery first. Some pieces are embroidered on fabric already sewn; others receive fabrics cut and applied by hand, ribbons, lace, braid, an antique button. And over all of it, the embroidery that draws and holds: chain stitch, cross stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, flat stitch, satin stitch. Isabel learned them in Spanish - punto cadena, punto cruz, punto atrás, punto tallo, punto plano, punto satén - and that is still what she calls them. They are listed on every piece, because they make the drawing, and because they are the work you pay for.

A cushion takes between ten and twenty hours of embroidery depending on how dense the motif is. The working time is given on each piece. Prices are excluding postage, calculated by destination.

Small pieces

Small embroidered cushions filled with lavender or rosemary, for a drawer, a wardrobe, a doll's house. An hour and a half of embroidery, 18 euros each, 48 euros for three.

Motifs embroidered for you

A flower that matters, a landscape, a date, a name. Say what you would like to see, and Isabel will tell you whether she can embroider it.

I

You write what you have in mind, with a photograph if you have one.

II

She proposes a drawing and a price. Until the drawing is right, nothing begins.

III

She embroiders, and sends a photograph along the way.

IV

The piece is sent, with its care instructions.

Price and timing

From 150 euros for a 30 x 30 cm cushion. The price depends on the size and the density of the motif, that is to say on the number of hours. It is given before the work starts, never after.

Allow four to seven weeks depending on the season. Isabel takes only two bespoke orders a month, so as never to work in a hurry.

"I write to you on the day I start, and on the day the last stitch is made."

Worth knowing

A piece embroidered at your request is made for you alone. It cannot be returned or exchanged, unlike the cushions from the collections. That is the law, and it is also common sense: a name embroidered on a cushion cannot be resold.

Write to isabel@shiki-broderies.com describing your project.
